Ecology and Management of Grazing
Introduction
The costs of attending a 2-3 day short course on campus can be expensive. To reduce the cost of continuing education and to make short courses available on a flexible time schedule the California Rangeland Research and Information Center at the University of California at Davis is offering an online course entitled “Ecology and Management of Grazing.” This course, consisting of four modules, was developed by Dr. Mel George and Cody Sheehy in collaboration with UC Cooperative Extension Livestock and Natural Resource Advisors and University of California and California State University faculty.
Who Should Take This Course
This course will be of interest to staff in government agencies and NGOs who manage local, state and federal lands including open space districts, county parks, water districts and those who conduct education programs on these lands. This course will also be of interest to ranchers who wish to learn more about rangelands and grazing. This course covers grazing as an agricultural production activity, grazing for managing vegetation and grazing’s potential impacts on plants and ecosystems.
Course Description
This online course is organized in four modules that can be taken separately or in sequential order. Following are links to the course outline for each module:
Each module is introduced by a documentary quality high definition video followed by a series of narrated PowerPoint presentations. There are reading assignments and practical exercises. Each module is self-paced and will take 10 to 20 hours to complete.
How Does This Online Course Work?
Following fee payment you will set up a user name and password that will give you access to the grazing course website and to UC Davis SmartSite which is a course management website. Videos, narrated presentations and reading materials are presented in the course website. Assignment lists, instructor contact, homework and self paced quizzes are available through UCDavis SmartSite.

Registration
The enrollment fee of $200 includes access to videos, online presentations, and course reading materials for a module. There will be no fee for Module 4 for those completing Modules 1-3 ($600). Fees will be reduced to $150/person for groups of 6 or more. Contact Mel George (mrgeorge@ucdavis.edu, phone 530-752-1720) for group discounts. Each module is approved by the Society for Range Management for 16 continuing education units (CEUs)..
