STEP 6. Complete the Assessment Section
First you should determine what the regulatory agencies believe to be the pollutants and pollution sources in your basin or watershed. Links are provided to help you complete this section. One link is to assessment information compiled on a website at UC Davis. Another link is to California’s current Impaired Waterbody List (303d list).
You may find that the waterbody that your property drains into is not on the Impaired Water Body List. However, that does not mean that there are no pollution problems in that waterbody. It just means that they are less critical and not currently the focus of regulatory attention. The best thing you can do is work to keep your waterbody off of the Impaired Waterbody List by working with your neighbors to reduce pollutions sources. Completing a self-assessment and a water quality plan for your ranch is a good start to protecting the quality of water in your waterbody.
