Rangeland Management Education in California
  • U.S. Civil Service requires completion to 18 semester units of rangeland management courses to qualify for federal jobs.
  • Certification as a Certified Range Manager by California’s Forest Licensing Board requires coursework in range management.
  • Humboldt State University offers sufficient undergraduate coursework to meet U.S. Civil Service requirements.
  • UC Berkeley offers 10 undergraduate units and 11 graduate units in rangeland resources. Undergraduate and graduate students can meet Civil Service requirements by taking these courses. UC Berkeley also offers an MS in Range Management.
  • UC Davis offers courses in rangeland ecology, grass identification, herbivore ecology and restoration ecology. This curriculum is inadequate to meet U.S. Civil Service requirements.
  • Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo, CSU Fresno and CSU Chico have offered one or more courses in range management to meet the needs of animal science and other majors but they do not offer sufficient coursework to meet state certification or federal civil service requirements. Cal Poly students can minor in range management.
  • A few community colleges offer rangeland management courses.
  • Therefore, if you are interested in completing a B.S. degree in rangeland resources you must attend Humboldt State University, UC Berkeley or go out of state.
