Irrigated pasture is an important source of forage for beef cattle, sheep, horses and dairies.
Most California irrigated pastures contain cool season grasses (ryegrass, orchard grass, tall fescue) and cool season legumes (ladino clover, strawberry clover, trefoil). Cool season irrigated pasture are most productive in the spring and early summer. Hot weather dampens production as the summer progresses.
Warm season grasses can extend the high production period by a month into the summer.
